The Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS), the State Key Laboratory of Mechanism and Quality of Chinese Medicine (SKL-MQCM), and the Centre for Immune Regulation at the University of Macau (UM) jointly organised an international symposium titled ‘Natural Products and Immunity’. Over 100 experts, scholars, researchers, and students from Macao, Hong Kong, and the Chinese mainland, as well as the US, Ireland, and Mexico, attended the event to explore the latest advances in the research on the role of natural products in modulating immune responses and inflammation.

Xu Jian, vice rector of UM, said in her speech that the symposium reflected UM’s commitment to excellence in research and highlighted the university’s strategic focus on life sciences, translational medicine, and the modernisation of Chinese medicine. She added that Chinese medicine and health sciences have become key drivers of innovation-led development in Macao, and expressed hope that the symposium would accelerate the translation of research outcomes into tangible benefits for industry and public wellbeing.

Chen Xin, director of ICMS and director of SKL-MQCM, said in his speech that the aim of the symposium was to explore the therapeutic potential and mechanism of natural products, especially those used in traditional medicine, in immune modulation. By having leading international scholars deliver keynote presentations on cutting-edge topics, the event would provide a platform for academic exchange and industrialisation, fostering synergy between basic research, clinical application, and translational development.

The symposium also featured the launch ceremony of Macao’s key R&D projects on the mechanisms and translational research of immune modulation by Chinese medicine.
